IsDB Group: Powering Pakistan's Green Future
Pakistan, a nation of breathtaking landscapes and vibrant cultures, faces a significant challenge - balancing development with environmental sustainability. The Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) is proud to be a partner supporting Pakistan's green agenda through a groundbreaking project: the Mohmand Dam and Hydropower Project.
Nestled amidst the majestic peaks of northwestern Pakistan, the Swat River carves a fertile path. However, during monsoon seasons, the river transforms into a raging torrent, posing a constant threat of floods. This unpredictability has hampered agricultural productivity and jeopardized the well-being of millions who call this region home.
IsDB, recognizing this challenge, has provided financing from its own resources and mobilized additional resources from development partners to finance the Mohmand Dam and Hydropower Project – a beacon of hope for a more sustainable future. This multipurpose dam is set to be a game-changer, tackling several critical issues simultaneously.
At the heart of the project lies a commitment to clean energy. The dam will house a hydroelectric power plant, generating a staggering 2,862 GWh of clean electricity annually (sufficient to light up more than 1.2 million homes). This will significantly reduce Pakistan's dependence on fossil fuels, leading to a cleaner environment and improved air quality. Imagine millions of homes lit up with renewable energy, a testament to Pakistan's green transformation.
But the benefits extend far beyond generating clean electricity. The Mohmand Dam will serve as a vital reservoir, holding back a staggering 1.5 billion cubic meters of water during the monsoon season. This will play a pivotal role in flood control, protecting communities and infrastructure from the devastating effects of these natural disasters. The controlled release of water throughout the year will also ensure a more stable water flow in the Swat River.
Pakistan's agricultural sector is poised for a significant boost. The project, spearheaded by the Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), will irrigate a remarkable 6,773 hectares of new farmland, bringing life to previously arid lands. Existing agricultural areas will also benefit from increased water availability, leading to higher crop yields. This translates to greater food security for the nation and improved livelihoods for countless farmers.
The project doesn't stop there. Over 2 million people in Peshawar, the bustling capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, will gain access to a reliable supply of clean water. This is a life-changing project, ensuring access to a basic human right and promoting better public health.
The Mohmand Dam and Hydropower Project is a shining example of how infrastructure development can be harmonized with environmental responsibility. It is a testament to the power of collaboration, bringing together IsDB's financial muscle with the expertise of WAPDA, the Pakistani government, and other local and international partners including the OPEC Fund for International Development, the Saudi Fund for Development, and the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development.
This project is not merely about building a dam; it's about building a brighter future for Pakistan. It's about empowering communities, nurturing a thriving agricultural sector, and safeguarding the environment for generations to come. With the Mohmand Dam, IsDB is proud to walk alongside Pakistan, WAPDA, and its people on their journey towards a greener, more prosperous future.
